The scoop
Barrett's Coffee is a North Austin cafe and working roastery on West St. John's Avenue that has house-roasted its own beans since opening in 2017. The spacious, laptop-friendly space pairs single-origin drip and espresso with cult-favorite nitro cold brew drinks and breakfast tacos, right beside the roasting operation.
Owner Travis Kizer, a veteran of Austin's third-wave coffee scene who has worked in the industry since 1992, opened Barrett's first cafe on West St. John's Avenue in 2017 after years of roasting coffee locally. The original location still roasts five days a week on two Diedrich drum roasters, producing about 5,000 pounds of beans weekly, and the brand has since expanded with a second cafe, Barrett's Too, in North Loop.
What to order
Nitro Root Beer Float
Nitro cold brew mixed with Bubbs tamarind root beer syrup for an all-liquid, coffee-forward take on the classic soda-fountain float; described by local reviewers as one of Barrett's defining drinks.
Cold Brew
House-roasted cold brew sold both by the cup in the cafe and by the jug for retail/delivery.
Single-Origin Coffee Beans
Rotating house-roasted single-origin beans (e.g. Bali Kitamani Organic Natural, Ethiopia Yirgacheffe Washed Konga, Colombia Cauca Sotara Pink Bourbon) roasted in-house in Austin.

Bubbs Seltzer & Syrups
In-house Bubbs specialty syrups (coconut lime agave, pineapple ginger, strawberry hibiscus, tamarind root beer) and a reusable siphon-bottled seltzer line, sold retail and used in cafe drinks.
