The scoop
Genuine Joe is a longtime North Austin neighborhood coffeehouse known for its bohemian, mismatched-furniture charm and come-as-you-are welcome. After a forced move from its original Anderson Lane home, it now operates inside Russell's Bakery, serving espresso drinks and fresh-baked pastries in a cozy, multi-room space.
Opened in 2005 on W Anderson Lane, Genuine Joe became a fixture for North Austin artists, writers, and 12-step/recovery groups under founding ownership before Josh Brown, originally a regular customer, took over around 2017. When the property was sold to condo developers in 2021, the shop operated on month-to-month leases until finally closing October 30, 2024; a community GoFundMe and a partnership with Russell's Bakery allowed it to reopen at a new shared location, 2525 W Anderson Ln, in February 2025.
