The scoop
BarleyBean is a boutique coffeehouse and in-house roastery on South Lamar Boulevard serving specialty espresso drinks, smoothies, and a full breakfast-to-dinner menu of wood-fired pizza, paninis, and wraps. The cafe also pours craft beer and wine and hosts live music, functioning as both a coffee stop and a neighborhood hangout.
Co-founder Mohit Mehra opened an unbranded coffee concept in 2009 after a frustrating pre-meeting coffee run convinced him Austin needed better specialty coffee. In 2014 he partnered with Ryan Mosler, who shared his vision for the cafe, and together they rebranded and relaunched the South Lamar shop as BarleyBean on Halloween of that year. Mosler, as Master Roaster, built out BarleyBean's in-house roasting program starting in 2015 and added a Probat roaster in 2016. The South Lamar cafe remains the original BarleyBean location; a second outpost opened near UT Austin in October 2025.
