Hot L Coffee

Hotel-lobby coffee counter inside a converted 1948 union hall.

The scoop

A walk-up coffee counter just inside the lobby of the Carpenter Hotel, a boutique property built into South Austin's former Carpenters Union Hall (1948) near Zilker Park and Barton Springs. Mornings bring espresso drinks like the orange-blossom Ladybird Latte alongside breakfast tacos, bagels, and kolaches, and the same counter shifts into happy-hour cocktails and small plates by late afternoon.

The Carpenter Hotel, from hospitality group Mighty Union (Bunkhouse), opened November 2, 2018 inside the restored 1948 Local 1266 Carpenters Union Hall on Josephine Street. The coffee counter, originally branded Hot L Coffee, was developed under food-and-beverage director Christina Skogly Knowlton with input from her husband, longtime Bon Appétit editor Andrew Knowlton, and leans into the building's institutional roots with white subway tile and a metal, binder-clip menu board. The counter now appears in Bunkhouse's own materials simply as the hotel's "Coffee Bar," though the original Hot L Coffee name persists on its Instagram and Facebook pages.
