Houndstooth

Austin's original third-wave espresso bar, roasting under the Tweed name since 2010.

The scoop

Houndstooth's original North Lamar cafe is an intimate, counter-forward espresso bar in Rosedale where baristas work in full view of the room. It's built for a quick, well-made cup rather than a long laptop session, with cortados, cappuccinos, and pour-overs pulled from coffee roasted by the founders' own Tweed Coffee Roasters.

Brothers Sean and Paul Henry opened the first Houndstooth Coffee on North Lamar in Austin's Rosedale neighborhood in May 2010, with Sean originally running the shop and Paul joining as a barista before the two expanded together. The company grew into a small chain across Austin and Dallas and never took outside funding; the Henry brothers later founded Tweed Coffee, a Dallas-based roastery, to supply Houndstooth's cafes, including a house blend called Timepiece. Sean and Paul Henry were named Imbibe Magazine's 2019 Coffee People of the Year.

What to order

  1. Cortado

Espresso cut with a small amount of steamed milk; frequently singled out by reviewers as one of the shop's best drinks.

  2. Cappuccino

Classic espresso-and-milk cappuccino; a local reviewer called it one of the best they've had in the city.

  3. Siphon Coffee

Vacuum siphon-brewed coffee, a slower manual brew method offered alongside pour-over.

  4. Timepiece

Houndstooth's house espresso blend, roasted by the founders' own Tweed Coffee Roasters in Dallas.

  5. Pastries (Bakerman's Bakery)

Daily croissants, muffins, and cupcakes sourced from Bakerman's Bakery, served alongside coffee.
