Terrible Love
Playful specialty lattes and craft espresso out of a converted 1911 boiler room in Hyde Park.
The scoop
Terrible Love is a small coffee shop tucked into the old boiler room of the historic Baker Center in Hyde Park, a former 1911 schoolhouse now used as offices just north of the University of Texas campus. They pull espresso from Huckleberry Coffee Roasters and pour Mexican coffee from Mercado Sin Nombre alongside chai, matcha, and cold brew, plus pastries from Texas French Bread and breakfast tacos from El Xolo. Specialty drinks lean playful and built on house-made syrups, and there is no upcharge for alternative milks.
Founder Brian Knowles left a decade practicing law to turn a coffee hobby into a business, opening Terrible Love in May 2021 out of a retrofitted horse trailer (originally a Shetland pony hauler) near Kenny Dorham's Backyard Community Garden on East 11th Street. He named the shop after a song by The National. The trailer later moved to Oddwood Brewing before the business settled into its current home in the Baker Center's old boiler room in Hyde Park in 2022.
