First Light

Coffee window and wine bar built into a Hyde Park bookshop inside a former post office.

The scoop

First Light is a hybrid bookshop and cafe in Austin's Hyde Park neighborhood, set inside a converted historic post office with stained glass windows and tiled floors. A coffee window opens each morning for espresso drinks and drip coffee, and the space doubles as a wine bar and bookstore with reading nooks and a courtyard for gathering. Members receive free daily drip coffee, book discounts, and access to community programming like trivia nights and book clubs.

Husband-and-wife team Taylor and Robin Bruce opened First Light in August 2023 with general manager and partner Breezy Mayo, converting the former Hyde Park Post Office into a combined bookshop, coffee bar, and wine bar.
