Quack's 43rd Street Bakery
Hyde Park's scratch-made bakery and coffeehouse, baking since 1983.
The scoop
Quack's 43rd Street Bakery is a longtime Hyde Park bakery and coffee shop serving scratch-made pastries, custom cakes, and espresso drinks. The menu spans breakfast pastries, pies, decorated cookies, and creative coffee drinks like flavored lattes and mochas. It's a quirky, colorful neighborhood institution near UT Austin, now grown into a small family of sister shops (Lady Quack's Cakery, Captain Quack's Coffeehouse).
The business began in 1983 as Captain Quackenbush's Intergalactic Dessert Company & Espresso Cafe, opened by Art Silver at 2120 Guadalupe St. on 'the Drag' across from UT Austin, and was known as one of the city's first espresso bars. After about fifteen years of declining campus foot traffic and rising rents, Silver moved and renamed the business Quack's 43rd Street Bakery at its current 411 E. 43rd St. location in Hyde Park in 1998, closing the original Drag shop the following year. It has remained family-owned for decades.
